Track List History
  1. I Feel Fine: The Beatles found it difficult to write songs for this album because they were so busy. On October 6 while recording 8 days a week, John was working on a guitar riff that would become the basis of "I Feel Fine." It was recorded 12 days later. The distinct feature of this song is the sound of feedback which slides into the opening chords. Having mastered studio basics, George Martin was trying to take them farther by finding fresh noises, such as electronic goofs, twisted tapes, and talkback. Feedback was to become familiar with Jimi Hendrix and The Who. This song became number one in Britian and America.

  2. She's a woman: It was written in the studio on October 8, 1964 by Paul. The song praised Paul's woman for being selflessly devoted to him. It was the first Beatles song to contain veiled drug reference. The verse, "It turns me on when you I get lonely," was not caught by sensors because they didn't know drug culture or terminology. Five weeks before this song was written, they smoked marijuana for the first time.

  3. Eight Days a Week: Ringo coined the phrase after complaining about the work load. Paul heard it and turned it into a song. Recorded in October of 1964, it made number one as a follow up to "I Feel Fine."

  4. I'm a Loser: After buying a Bob Dylan album, title 'Bob Dylan', John was influenced by it. The second event to affect him was a meeting with journalist Kenneth Allsop. This song was the first fruit of his meeting because Allsop encouraged John not to hide his true feelings. On the surface it is yet about song about having lost a girl, but hte lines that say beneath the mask "he is wearing a frown", suggest that he considers himself a loser in more ways than one. He feels that not only is he a loser in love, but in life as well.

  5. No Reply: This is a typical John song of betrayal and jealousy. It is another story of a girl taking off with a guy. The boy becomes suspicious when his girl doesn't answer the door and when he calls her on the phone, her parents say she isn't home. He watches from the shadows and sees her with another man.

  6. I Don't Want To Spoil The Party: The Beatles visited America in Febuary 1964. The played in Washington DC and New York City to promote "I Want to Hold Your Hand." They started the tour in August 1964, and this month long trek would take them to 20 cities, plus three in Canada. John and Paul had to write in hotel rooms and while flying between dates. This is a song about being stood up by a date. It is not so much about the loss of a girl, but his inability to pretend he was happy.

  7. I'll Follow The Sun: Originally written in 1959, this song shows Buddy Holly's influence on Paul. Paul lyrics in this song accept that no such promise is possible, that a gurantee that love would last.

  8. Baby's In Black: This is a simple song with a simple story about a boy who loves a girl, the girl loves the other boy, and the other boy doesn't love the girl. The girl feels the blues and dresses in black. This is the first song since "I Want To Hold Your Hand" that is written by both Paul and John. It was also the first song to be recorded for the album.

  9. Every Little Thing: Written by Paul for Jane Asher, this song tells a story of a lucky guy whose girl loves him so much she does everything for him.

  10. What You're Doing: This song tells a story of a boy being given the run around by his girl. The most memorable part is the Beatles shouting the first word of each verse with Paul completing the phrases. It was written by Paul with some additions from John. The recording began in September 1964 and picked up again in late October with the track being re-made. Time Riley, author of Tell Me Why, says the addition of piano for just the guitar solo and the final fade out suggested a love for detail.

*** The following songs were mentioned were written by the Beatles. Other songs may be included on the album and not mentioned.***
